چکیده

The western north Atlantic Ocean constitutes a major route for autumnal migrants moving between eastern North America and the Caribbean or South America. Some shorebirds have long been known to use this route (Lincoln, 1939; Hagar, 1966; Palmer, 1968; McNeil and Burton, 1973), and recently Drury and Nisbet (1964) and Nisbet (1970) have stated that the Blackpoll Warbler (Dendroica striata) probably flies over the western Atlantic between New England and South America, although this route was disputed by Murray (1965). Atlantic migrants have been studied with radar installations on the North American coast

Contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August Rainfall over Uganda and Western Kenya

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...

Decadal Variabilities of the Upper Layers of the Subtropical North Atlantic: An Ocean Model Study

Numerical simulations of the Atlantic Ocean during the period 1950 to 1989, using a sigma coordinate, free surface numerical model, show long-term variabilities in the upper ocean subtropical gyre similar to those obtained from observations. The simulations show how westward propagating planetary waves, originated in the eastern North Atlantic, affect interdecadal variabilities of ocean propert...

Neotropical Bird Migration during the Ice Ages: Orientation and Ecology

--Reconstruction f breeding habitat of North American Neotropical migrants 18,000 years ago and 9,000 years ago indicated major shifts in both location and composition of plant communities relative to present conditions. Increased vegetation in xeric areas may have compensated, at least in part, for the reduction in breeding habitat due to glaciation. Autumnal flights of Neotropical passerine m...

Ocean noise in the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean.

Ocean ambient noise is well studied in the North Pacific and North Atlantic but is poorly described for most of the worlds' oceans. Calibrated passive acoustic recordings were collected during 2009-2010 at seven locations in the central and western tropical and subtropical Pacific. Monthly and hourly mean power spectra (15-1000 Hz) were calculated in addition to their skewness, kurtosis, and pe...

Stormy Seas for Some North American Songbirds: Are Declines Related to Severe Storms During Migration?

‘‘Many large flocks of birds flew over, coming from the north and flying to the SW. They were more varied in kind than any we had seen before and they were land birds . . . . I know that most of the islands discovered by the Portuguese have been found because of birds.’’—Christopher Columbus, east of Bermuda, 7 October 1492 Several hypotheses have been presented to explain population declines i...
